What is the Sperm DNA Decondensation (SDD) Test?
The SDD test assesses if the sperm DNA will function properly after entering the egg during the fertilization process. Once in the egg, the sperm's DNA goes through a series of steps to combine with the egg's DNA. The main step is when the sperm DNA unwinds (called decondensation). This event must occur correctly in the fertilization process.
For example, the sperm DNA is like a compressed file for a computer program. The compressed file must "unzip" before the program can run. The SDD test checks to see if the sperm DNA is "unzipping" properly. The SDD test will evaluate if sperm is incapable of normal decondensation and therefore, embryonic development.
Did you know...? There are many environmental and lifestyle factors that can cause problems with sperm. For example, if a man is exposed to harmful chemicals at work, this can certainly cause problems with sperm. Some additional problematic lifestyle factors include, types of exercise (like bicycling), medicine regimen/history, smoking, drinking, certain hobbies or other industrial factors, or even taking too many hot baths; all can result in damaged sperm. If you have an abnormal SDD Test score, first, you should consult a physician. By identifying and removing yourself from the sperm-damaging cause, you may easily correct the problem. The Male Factor provides you with the answers you need to bring home a baby sooner.

What can the SDD test do for you?
One great feature of the SDD test for men is that everything can be done in the privacy of your own home. Going to the doctors’ office or a sperm bank to give a specimen sample can be uncomfortable, awkward, and embarrassing. The SDD test can be ordered and shipped directly to your home in discreet packaging. At home, you will be able to easily collect your sample for shipping. The specimen is sent to our lab and you have results within 9 days. This is an ideal method of testing for males and offers insight that can help you bring home a baby sooner.
Some additional benefits:
- The SDD test will provide information to help you select the most appropriate Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) method. This will save you time and the significant expense of trial and error, which are heavy burdens for you and your spouse.
- The SDD test will identify males producing sperm that cannot activate proper embryonic development. This should be determined BEFORE a couple undergoes IUI, IVF and/or ICSI, which can result in huge cost savings.
You are not alone. 1 in 4 males have problems with sperm quality. This includes but is not limited to low sperm count, abnormal size and shape, poor movement, etc… Basic semen analysis can tell you these basic things, but that will not give you the answers you need to know. The SDD test is not your normal, basic sperm assay. The SDD test will make it possible for you to have an individualized and specific treatment plan which will give you the answers you need to help you achieve conception sooner.
If the patient has an abnormal SDD test score, we recommend visiting your doctor. If no reason can be found for your abnormal score, your ONLY option may be Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). Other forms of ART such as Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) are statistically shown not to be effective with an abnormal SDD score.
